This Voutilainen Monopusher Chronograph was released in 2010, and marries a striking combination of a white gold case and a copper-toned dial. Powered by a modified Valjoux movement, this piece is a testament to the watchmaker's mastery of restoration and a demonstration of his innovative skill. This particular version is from a limited series of five watches.
Voutilainen: The Watchmaker and The Manufacture
After a period spent restoring some of the finest watches from the last three centuries, Kari Voutilainen set out as an independent watchmaker. His work has been welcomed with great acclaim, on account of its unique aesthetic and quality. Every component in his watches, from the bridges to the smallest of screws, involves manual labour, from adjusting tolerances to polishing and angling.
His efforts have been recognised with more than a half dozen awards the GPHG (Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève), the most prestigious award ceremony in the watch industry. Since becoming an independent, the brand Voutilainen has slowly but surely begun to expand, without wavering from their commitment to quality.
This Monopusher represents the best of Voutilainen’s two worlds—refinishing and rebuilding old movements, while retaining his signature style and implementing his distinctive guilloché motifs.
Restoration and Rebirth
Voutilainen has significant experience in renewing and refreshing movements for his watches. From the Chronometrè 27, where he used an observatory-grade Longines 360 ébauche, to the Observatoire, where he modified and refinished Peseux observatory-grade ébauches, and his Minute Repeater, in which the movement was a vintage LeCoultre ébauche that Voutilainen built on.
This Monopusher Chronograph follows a very similar trajectory, as Voutilainen refinished a series of old Valjoux movements, initially found in older pocket watches. He built on this monopusher movement to create only five versions of this watch.
While Voutilainen only offers a limited number of models to his clients, the various configurations of designs he has produced are far too numerous to list. Rather unique amongst his peers, he looks to help guide his clients’ vision, rather than restrict them to a pre-determined and pre-designed catalogue.
The same principle applies to the Monopusher series—each is completely unique in terms of metal, dial-decoration, and numeral design.
The Design
This Monopusher is encased in white gold and features a copper-toned dial, a rather unusual combination that is seldom seen together, and which invokes a vintage feel. It also contains typical guilloché decoration that is characteristic of Voutilainen’s style, with the varying patterns between the outer and inner rings of the dial creating a mixture of tones and depth.
The indications are also rather unconventional, as the watch only displays the 11, 12, 1, and subsequently the 5, 6, 7 indications, the others absent to make room for the seconds and minutes sub-dials.
Applied index markers and matching Breguet hands, with blued steel, add further classicism to this piece, while Kari Voutilainen's signature tear-shaped lugs finish off this elegant Monopusher, showing the watchmaker's uncompromising attention to detail and craftsmanship.
The Movement
The sapphire case back of the watch displays the vintage movement, which has an exceptional level of finishing, and bears the watchmaker's signature.
This single-button chronograph movement is based on the classic architecture of column wheel control - a hallmark of high quality chronographs throughout history. Modified by Voutilainen, it features an adapted balance, alongside the watchmaker's distinctive hand-finishing, offering a unique contrast against the backdrop of patina on the various surfaces and baseplate of the movement.
